Blossoms established themselves as one of the rising stars UK indie rock when they burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album. The album was clever, inventive, and was full of super-catchy, upbeat, summery songs. I loved the album- it was super impressive considering it was the band’s first album. But we all know that the most difficult hurdle in many band’s careers is that second album. In some cases it can propel you into stardom, but if it goes badly, you can also fade into obscurity before your career has even begun…
From the opening, it’s clear that the band has still got it. ‘There’s A Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)’ is an 80’s tinged indie anthem, seeming destined to fill venues all over the UK and further. But a thought struck me as I was listening to it- have I heard this before? It is definitely a unique song, but the sound itself showed little change from last album. From that moment, worry struck my mind- was this a case of second album syndrome- had the band really changed all that much?
The story of the next few tracks then, is the one of how this band escaped from that curse, and transformed this into something better than they’ve ever created. Take the title track- an indie anthem underpinned by excellent bass grooves and uplifted by that synth sound we’ve all come to know and love. Or maybe ‘Unfaithful’- sounding like it came straight out of the 80’s, this song is a burst of summery, synth perfection- and it’s super catchy too. And if you still have any doubts in your mind, just give the wonderful ‘Lying Again’ a listen- it’s bound to change your mind.
In one word, this album is a triumph. I must admit, I had my doubts that they could live up to their first album- but the band have proved me, and countless others wrong. This takes all of the best aspects of the last album, and improves on every single one, making every song feel unique and worthy to stand alone. It surpasses every expectation.
